From the Wellness Panel: 5 Things Nutritionist Sam is Loving this Spring

wellness panel blog week 3

Spring has finally sprung and with the change in season often comes changes in behaviours – whether that’s what we’re eating, how we’re exercising, and so much more. Throughout the 6 Week Kickstart we’ll be sitting down with each of our Wellness Panel to get a little insight into what they’re loving this spring.

As well as being a registered nutritionist and tester in our Development Kitchen, Sam has also represented NZ at the Olympics in hockey! With a huge passion for food and nutrition, she’s spent the better part of 10 years learning and understanding how to fuel her body to get the best out of it for her sport.

Here’s 5 things she’s is loving this Spring!

SALAD SEASON BABY

  • Salad season is back! I know that salads to many can seem like a boring ‘necessity’ on the side of our plate, but I love to be creative and make it the hero! I try to keep things interesting by packing it full of ingredients that provide lots of flavour and texture – e.g. nuts, seeds, herbs, pickles like kimchi & sauerkraut. I always make sure I pair it with some good quality protein to keep me feeling full.

BBQ WEATHER

  • While we are on the topic of foods, the other thing I am loving about spring is getting the BBQ out again! Meat always seems like the obvious choice for a BBQ, but I love grilling summer veg like courgettes, capsicums and asparagus – they pick up so much flavour!

RECONNECTING

  • Winter can be a tough time to foster social connections – when it’s dark and cold we often don’t feel like making the effort after work or on the weekend to get out there and catch up with friends. But spring always seems to breathe a new bit of life into our social lives! With warmer weather and longer evenings, I find there are lots more ways to get out there and connect with my friends. I always enjoy sharing a picnic meal on the beach or going for a walk in the park after work!

MOVEMENT OUTSIDE

  • I tend to use the gym a lot more during winter, but as soon as the weather perks up, get me outside! I find I can be a lot more creative with my movement during the spring and summer months, whether it’s simply moving my mat outside and doing my pilates session outdoors or finding a new track or trail to explore on the weekend. I definitely feel an added boost to my exercise endorphins when I combine movement & nature!

READING

  • I’m not always consistent when it comes to reading books, but when I do get stuck into one it’s something that I absolutely love. The spring weather always reminds me of holidays spent reading and inspires me to get back on the wagon! It feels like such a break away from whatever is going on in my day, and it’s always nice to distract the mind with something that isn’t a screen. I just finished Dirt Town- highly recommend if you are into an easy read that grips you!
