Resolution Retreats is the only weight loss, health and wellness retreat exclusively for women in New Zealand. Their world-class luxury health retreats range from three-day fresh start retreats to their three-week life-changer retreats.

We asked their founder, Joelene Ranby, how she owns her mornings!

Are you a morning person? How do you own your mornings?

Yes! I am an ‘early bird’ as opposed to a ‘lark’. As an early riser, the first thing I do when I wake up is to open the curtains so that the morning sun can shine into my eyeballs and wake me up properly. I do drink coffee, but leave it until mid-morning slot, as your cortisol (stress hormone) is highest first thing in the morning.

Mornings are special for me because it’s the time that I really invest in the ‘happiness quadrant’ of my wheel of wellness before the chaos of the day takes over. Whether that be quality time with the family, or doing something else for myself in the morning, having that little bit of extra time by getting up earlier, I feel as though I am more in control of how I choose to start my day.

What are you loving at the moment?

‘Senza’ ethnobotanical-infused sparkling water (say that three times fast!). Not only do I use it for my pre-bed wind down routine, but I also use it during the day if I’m feeling a little overwhelmed, stressed or anxious. It really works for me, and I’m so glad I discovered it.

What are you eating at the moment?

At the moment, I’m enjoying making home-made yoghurt! Not only does help with our shopping budget, but it is so easy and convenient to make. If you make a batch before bed using a yogurt maker, chilly bin, or even just your oven’s warming drawer, its ready when you wake up. Good for your breakfast, good for your tummy, good for your immune system, good for your wallet … get it in ya!

How do you practice mindfulness?

Glad you asked actually!  I’m currently learning a new CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) technique for when I get frustrated (or angry) with something.  For me, frustration comes up when I feel my needs are not being met or my voice isn’t being heard. So when this happens, I am trying to consciously acknowledge why, and ask myself the question “what do I need right now”. I’m certainly not perfect at it, but the more I’m employing the technique, the more benefit I’m getting out of it. It takes a lot of energy to be frustrated or angry, so I’m enjoying being a bit more mindful of how I spend my precious energy.
