Our My Food Truck recipe series is in full swing! In addition to our own recipes, we’ve teamed up with some of our favourite Kiwi food trucks to bring you the best of the streets. Get to know the first of our My Food Truck partners, Captain Kai Moana!
Captain Kai Moana is a Kiwi innovation, the first of its kind – a food truck boat! Selling uniquely delicious Kiwiana Kaimana. From garlic butter BBQ scallops on fry bread to cream paua pockets to BBQ crayfish, whitebait fritters, whole BBQ flounder, seafood chowder and more, Captain Kai Moana brings all the Kiwi kai classics to one restaurant.
Started out of lockdown 2020, Karim and his dad Tim renovated an old wooden 17ft trailer boat into a full, top of the line, fast food efficient kitchen and began selling delicious seafood across New Zealand. In one short year, the Captain Kai Moana fleet now has four vessels ranging in size from 10ft–25ft.
Employing family and close friends, Captain Kai Moana’s kaupapa is all about paying it forward and feeding those in need through delivering the highest quality seafood dishes for the best possible price, making it as affordable as possible for every Kiwi.
With plans to open five more boats in New Zealand and then take this concept to Australia, Captain Kai Moana is ready to take the unique Kiwiana menu to the world.
