There are so many great options out there for quick, easy, cheap eats when you fancy a good old takeaway dinner. With such a growing demand for plant based options, you can still enjoy plenty of choice when deciding on your Friday night take out. While there are some great fully plant based eateries now, there are also a range of places that offer plant based options or are happy to accommodate to dietary requirements. Here are a few of our favourite spots to give you ideas on where to head and what to look for!
Thai food is a great place to start, with rice and noodles often used as the base for dishes and loads of fresh vege always packed in. It is also easy enough to sub in tofu or extra veggies in the place of meat and chicken, customising dishes that originally weren’t plant based. Just watch out for fish sauce which can sometimes hide and ask for rice noodles over egg noodles. Our favourite spots include Chu Thai, Soul Thai and Sunflower Thai Restaurant for Auckland foodies, Monsoon Poon in Wellington or Thai Container in Christchurch.
You can’t go wrong with beans, guacamole and corn chips so it’s no surprise Mexican is on our list for tasty plant-based takeaways. Mexico Restaurant (in lots of spots across the country) is our pick as they have heaps of vegan options on their menu, including jackfruit quesadillas, avocado tacos and mushroom chimichangas. All of the fresh herbs and veggies make for a seriously tasty meal, no meat missed!
Another favourite is Auckland-based Wise Boys – a completely plant-based burger shop that whips up an extensive menu of delicious burgers, fries and shakes. What started as a small food truck is now a permanent takeaway shop and often has lines out the doors on weekend evenings – and for good reason. Their delicious patties are all homemade and they even have their own in-house vegan mayo and aioli. If you’re in the mood for a hearty and delicious burger then this is the spot! Burger Fuel (in lots of spots across the country) are leading the charge for takeaway franchises serving up extensive plant-based menus – we love their V8 Vegan and Pumpkin and Chickpea Motobites, delish!
And lastly, we have to mention Duck Island, as their vegan ice cream menu is hard to compete with. The choice is almost too hard with so many indulgent options and there are even vegan toppings and sauces to really complete the experience. If you don’t have a Duck Island near you then don’t worry, their tubs are available in most supermarkets now too!
